Was it all a dream?

Brendan and Mark have been threatening to take me caving for some time but it's only a few weeks since my pelvic scaffolding was surgically removed and so far too early to contemplate a return to the underworld.

Last weekend it was forecast to be a sunny, if a little cold, so I decided to mosey on down to South Wales for some gentle therapeutic walking.
Here I am strolling along minding my own business. After this my memories are very vague but I'll try to piece together what may have happened.

I seem to recall hearing a diesel vehicle, possibly a van approaching at great speed from behind.

Who are these two suspicious looking characters? They look like they might be up to no good. Could they be hatching a cunning plan?
After this everything went dark and it is as if the rest of the weekend has been wiped from my memory, but over the last couple of days I've kept having vivid dreams in which I'm caving again. It's all really rather distressing.

These dreams always seem to feature me in exposed locations and they invariably end with maniacal laughter. I know they are just dreams but they are so authentic they could easily be real.

In one particular dream I'm making my way along narrow ledges with nothing below me and only my crutches for support. I wake up in a cold sweat, but then a thought strikes me. Perhaps crutches are the ideal caving aid for those cavers who do not like traverses.

In another dream I'm falling down a deep hole, deep enough to cause massive injuries, (and I dread having to go back to hospital) but I'm saved from this by my crutch jamming across the hole.

And then my dreams get even more bizarre. Falling is a recurring theme. Falling, falling, falling ... forever falling.
A bit like this.

And then suddenly I'm in the company of Brendan and Mark. I've no idea where they came from. They wish me well and they say they hope I'll be caving again in the not too distant future. I thank them and they drive off.

A lost weekend!

OFD to Cwm Dwr Through Trip

For Sunday we were joined by Ian who had requested a through trip. Jess and I were feeling somewhat better rested after a good meal and nights sleep.
We were in good spirits as we sauntered down the hill and in to the bottom entrance. We set an easy pace to ensure Ian enjoyed rather than endured his trip and even made time for a couple of photo's as we made our way through.
At the letter box Ian was pleased to find the climb and manoeuvre in to the slot was easier than he feared and again at the divers pitch he had worried it would be tougher than it was.
Infact at 70 this year Ian did a sterling job tackling each obstacle and even shot through the exit crawls at such speed that I had trouble keeping up with him!

Swept off my feet on Valentine's Day

As members of not just Dudley CC but also SWCC, Brendan, Mark and myself had been asked to help out on one of their 'Provisionals' weekends.
Mark was unsure whether I'd be keen on spending Valentine's Day caving with unknown newbies, particularly as Brendan had already asked him out for a meal on Valentine's evening, but as we spent last year's Valentine's camped in a popular dogging spot near Abergavenny (accidentally!!) I figured this year's could only be an improvement.
Claire Vivian of SWCC had done a tremendous amount of preparation for the weekend and groups were soon organised to go underground. We were asked to take two groups from Southampton Uni - not strictly novices but inexperienced cavers who wanted to go further afield in the cave systems. I envisaged a romp around Top Entrance route-finding and was looking forward to the day.
One of the groups wanted to go and find cave entrances in the more general area, such as Clydach Gorge, so that they could plan future trips, and it made sense that Brendan should show them where to look. The other group wanted to do something more demanding - a through trip from OFD1 to Top Entrance. Much as I tried to persuade them that the Marble Showers Traverses were the best way to do the through trip, they were determined to experience the delights of the streamway, and it was with a heavy heart that I waved Brendan off in his nice, warm car, and plodded down the hill to get wet.
The water was well over the step when we got to OFD1, but not at a dangerous level so off we set. All went well for the first section and we quickly passed Lowe's climb and went through the boulder choke. OFD 1 1/2 through to the junction with Cwm Dwr posed no problems and we were even shown a new way to enter the Letterbox feet first, which works really well.

"I think it's this way"
Once through the Confluence the streamway became really hard work. As I find the streamway hard at the best of times, I went first. The water was flowing so strongly that we had to fight our way up each cascade and find new ways to climb up the mini waterfalls. Then we arrived at the first pot. Whereas in the past I have happily skimmed across the surface of each pot and wriggled up the other side, now I was faced with a whirlpool. Following the swirl of the water it was easy to be swept around to the other side of the pot, but dragging yourself back out of the water against the flow was really strenuous, with the water trying to peel your fingers off the smooth rock. The last pot was the worst. I launched myself at the far edge but could not get a grip, and the water swept me straight round the pot back to where I started. Again I dived across and again the water pulled my desperate fingers off the rock. This time I was going under as I came back around the pot and two students pulled me out. One of them had a go at getting across the pot but ended up back at the start like me, and then finally the other managed to get across and pull himself out. I passed him a sling and he aided the rest of us across and out of the water. When it came to the last one in the group, he had no strength left to pull himself out, and Mark had to dive into the pot and push him out, dolphin-style. The water was also extremely cold, and by the time we reached the Oxbow and came out of the water our teeth were chattering.

Fighting against the flow in the streamway

The students started emptying their wellies and Mark looked at them, "You do know we have to get back into the steamway, don't you?" he asked. I think I heard whimpering; it could have been me.
Back in the streamway, we eventually reached the climb up towards Maypole Inlet. There was a fair amount of water coming down, and one of the students looked up at it.
"Just what I wanted after all that" he said "was to have to climb up a f***ing waterfall!"
The climb up Maypole Inlet itself proved a challenge for the weary group but soon we were all up into dry passage at last. Taking a short detour to take in the Trident, Judge and Swamp Creek on the way out, I elected to take the sandy crawls to the Corkscrew, in an effort to warm up, and took two of the group with me, while Mark continued up Salubrious with the rest.
Once out of the cave we were thanked profusely by the students, who then had their dinner and went straight to bed, broken! Brendan had not long been back after a leisurely potter around the countryside, so he graciously allowed me to accompany him and Mark for a curry to round off the day. Definitely a better Valentine's than last year!

Dudley South Wales Weekend OFD 1 Round Trip

Our original plan had been a through trip for Sunday, but after our adventures the previous day and because of the water levels, a slightly less demanding trip was called for.
We decided on an OFD – 1 round trip with a visit to Column Passage and The Eagle’s Nest thrown in.
We took the usual route and dropped in to the steam way at the step where the water level was just a few inches over.
We proceeded up the stream way through to boulder chamber before returning to Lowe’s chain to climb up to Lowe’s passage.
Keith had some fun, getting Loz to lead the way through roundabout chamber….Oh wow what lovely formations, much better than the one's we saw a moment ago, wow what lovely passageway, look another crawl......Keith could help himself no longer, it had been played to perfection, she had no idea she was now retracing her steps back the way she'd come ;) …and then the girls had further fun rolling through the roll over crawl ‘till Chloe got a smack in the chops from a closely following Loz.
Continuing on through Pi Chamber and over the Bolt Traverse and out the escape route before climbing up to take a look at the Column.  Keith found The Eagles Nest in a passage we had missed on the way through and I couldn’t resist having a quick round trip dropping down from the eagles nest to the stream way.
All that was left was a quick play at the water slide before heading out over Pluto’s Bath, where Loz and Crystal had some fun in the pot.

We finished the weekend in style with a good meal at the Beefeater before completing our drives home.

Successful Routefinding in OFD 2

OFD Top Entrance, Navigation Exercise Sunday 10 August 2014.
Jess had very kindly offered to ride shotgun for me on this navigation exercise and in doing so sacrificed a far more adventurous trip with Mark and Brendan & Carl, feigning 'It wasn't her favourite cave'Mark had provided a survey of the system from Top Entrance and highlighted a suitable route for me to follow. After the usual breakfast formalities at Luigis we arrived at a near empty SWCC.With the paperwork completed and us changed we set off with key to the entrance, but struggled for a while  with the lock, a goodly dose of WD40 might be efficacious!   Having secured the door from the inside we set off, the first couple of hundred yards or so were fine but l struggled with the scale of the survey, reaching some points sooner than expected and others seemed to take longer than implied. Some of the passages had obviously moved since my last visit and thereby hangs a cautionary tale. Previous trips in here had covered a variety of the popular sights and routes from different directions and it is easy to get them muddled in your mind, fortunately Jess was on hand providing the occasional hint to stop and review the situation.
Undaunted we carried on past the 'Wedding Cake' swerved around the end of 'Gnome Passage' and eventually found the 'Corkscrew' and down to the stream way in 'Salubrious Passage' where we indulged in some 'Traversing'. We turned on this occasion left to visit 'The Trident' and just beyond 'The Judge.' Retracing our steps we again followed the main passage way via 'The Crossroads' & 'Presidents Leap', into the 'Selenite Tunnels' to emerge at 'Shatter Pillar' a most aptly named landmark. Our return was a 'simple' reverse of the route in, simple it may seem but there are lessons to be learned here, main landmarks are helpful but junctions don't look the same in reverse and it pays to study them on the way in looking back as well as forward. Likewise good lamps are essential main beams can pick up the detail but miss the bigger picture, such as the Archway, a real land mark with flood but missable on main.
We made it back to the entrance with relative ease and the occasional steer from Jess and emerged into brilliant sunshine after 4 hours underground. Having showered and indulged in the compulsory tea/coffee and cakes we observed from inside the cottages the most ferocious hail storm l have ever seen before setting off to meet Mark, Brendan & Carl at Abergavenny. So what was learnt? Well leading a trip is nowhere as easy as it looks, so my Thanks to Jess and maximum respect to her and all the experienced members of D.C.C. who give so much of their time to assist new members in becoming better cavers. There is some reconciliation work to be done with the survey, landmarks and my mental positioning of them and then probably another trip to fix them in my mind.Present Jess Burkey & Ian Millward,

4 out of 6 ain't bad...

The Dig Weekend at the Brickworks Dig was so popular that the exercise needed some careful planning. It was decided that while one team was down the dig, I would take one group into Top Entrance for a quick trip, then we would return to take our turn at digging, while Brendan would take a group into Pant Mawr and return later to take over digging from our team.

In spite of having been caving for the last 9 years, this was my first try at leading a trip into OFD (something to do with being navigationally challenged) so I decided to keep thing simple by doing a short 'tourist trip' to the Trident and Judge, taking in the Corkscrew, Swamp Creek, Shatter Pillar, President's Leap, Selenite Tunnel and Salubrious Streamway. With a group comprised of Helen, Phil, Becca, Loz and Darren, we soon found ourselves at the Corkscrew climb down. Phil's shoulder had been playing up as soon as we got into the entrance, and he felt that relying on his dodgy shoulder to support him through the Corkscrew would not be sensible, so he decided to head back. As Helen knows Top Entrance well, I asked her to accompany him back to the entrance while the rest of us made our way slowly down the sand crawls towards Swamp Creek.

We met up with Helen again at the Trident and Judge and continued with the trip. All went well - 9 years of Keith and Brendan tutting in despair every time I failed to identify areas of the cave was finally vindicated. The most difficult part was tearing Darren away from all the 'pretties' - stals, curtains, helictites, and the roof of Selenite Tunnel being just a few. It's so lovely to go caving with people who are overwhelmed by how beautiful the caves are!

Once back at the entrance Helen left us and went off to squirrel around down a muddy tunnel and the rest of us went back to the club ready for our turn to dig.

Keith was waiting for us at the club, and for some reason didn't seem too impressed that I had set off with a group of 6, and come back with 4! I later found out that Phil and I had our wires crossed earlier, and that he had thought Helen was taking him an alternative route to join up with us, so had waited at the entrance and even wandered around some of the passages looking for us, before he gave up and went back to the club! Just goes to show how important it is to make sure we all understand the same thing.

Helen wasn't long in joining us, and although we were all ready to dig, there was no digging to be had, as one of the pumps had failed and there was a problem with bad air, so we were forced to drink tea in the sunshine for the rest of the afternoon.

OFD1 a trip to the Annex

An earlier attempt to reach the Annex had failed with both Mark and Brendan being unable to squeeze down the tight tube from Crystal Pool Chamber. An alternative route via a pitch down into The Canyon was planned and so the five of us headed into the cave with rope and an SRT kit with the aim of exploring this area of the cave. We headed straight to the Waterfall Series and were soon in Crystal Pool Chamber and climbed up into the passage leading to the pitch down into the Canyon. Our 20m rope was rigged to the natural threads and soon Mark was heading down the three stage pitch, most of which could be free-climbed with care. The rope was just long enough and one by one we dropped down into the impressive Canyon passage. We followed it in both directions, taking photos of the fantastic calcite flows in one section.

We then climbed up into a side passage that linked to The Annex where we admired the black gour pools and formations in the chamber, before our attention turned to the connecting crawl to Crystal Pool Chamber. Loz took the lead and after a little persuasion was through, Clive then followed with little trouble. With two through Brendan followed but not with the same ease, and had to have Mark remove a drink sachet from his sleeve pocket so he could push into the tightest section of the tube, with Mark pushing and Clive pulling Brendan was through too. Mark and Jess had seen enough and then decided to retrace their steps and de-rig the pitch.

Three Go Wild In Ogof Ffynnon Ddu

The plan for the day was to visit the Waterfall Series in OFD1, but as we thought that this might not fill the day we also decided to visit the Railton-Wild Series on the way. We underestimated the extent of both areas and so we will have to revisit the Waterfall Series on a following occasion. We entered the cave and followed a very low streamway to the point where the stream issues from a sump. Just before the sump is a ramp up a phreatic passage in the left hand wall (The Slide), where we climbed up into the start of the series. We first headed left via Gour Passage and had a look at several of the windows that overlook Pots 3 and 4 the streamway down below, before following the passage in the giant loop that it forms. We stopped off on the way to have a look at Bailit Way and then photographed the fine passage and formations that are found on the way around. We explored the side passages including Rodent Run, and passages leading off by Carrot Junction and also had a look at the impressively high Bat Aven, which Mark may return to have a further look at. We ended at the balconies overlooking the passage opposite Low's Climb, before we returned to the streamway and to make our way to the next destination - The Waterfall Series.

…...The Adventure Continued Wild, Waterfalls, and Tigers!

After spending some fun filled hours exploring every inch of the Railton-Wild Series we moved on to our main objective the Waterfall Series. Time wasn't on our side so rather than try to fully explore all the passages it was decided we would concentrate on Crystal Pool Chamber and The Annex.

Having spoken to a few people back at the club we were aware of two possible routes in to the Annex; one involves a tight downward tube with a squeeze and contortion 4 meters in, the other an 8m ladder pitch. Not knowing exactly how to access the pitch head, and as the way on to Crystal pool chamber involves an awkward climb up a rift which tightens at the top, we decided to leave the ladder at a junction we thought would lead to the pitch head and go and take a look at the Crystal Pool and the squeeze first.

No-one had any problems with the rift and traverse to the chamber and Brendan and I were soon trying to get a shot of the beautiful crystal pool whilst Jess had a squirrel around.
Re-grouping Myself, Brendan and Jess all took a look at the tight tube sloping downward and all opted to go feet first rather than fully commit. We all found the awkward squeeze impossible to do feet first as our suits were gathering around our arm pits and contortion was near impossible to navigate without being able to see the route. None of us were feeling brave enough to commit to trying it head first as backing out would be again almost impossible if we couldn't get through, so we decided to explore the passageways off the chamber and then use the ladder to access the Annex instead.

During our exploration Jess found the alternative ladder pitch which is actually accessed via a climb up to a passage off Crystal Pool chamber itself, as we had left the ladder some way back and were quickly running short on time, the Annex would have to wait for another day.
We popped our heads in to Tiger Aven where some unusual striped white and yellow straws give the area it's name and grabbed a couple of pictures as we made our way out. Having taken the dry traverse route on the way in, we opted for a thorough soaking through the waterfall on exit ;)

An enjoyable amble around bits of the system that were new to us and I look forward to returning to finish off the Waterfall Series soon!

OFD 1.5 with a little bit of Deja Vue

Following a visit earlier in the year we planned our return to OFD 1.5 so that we could visit the Boulder Bridge and the passages below and take photos and video during our visit. We pooled lighting sources for the video and with only three of us we headed to SWCC on Saturday morning for our trip. On arriving at Penwyllt we bumped into Clive and Steve from Cave & Crag, and after some light persuasion they were enticed into joining us. Heading into the cave we had a little faffing with the lock that was later taken back up to the club to fix and were soon at the climb up to OFD 1.5 where we set up the lighting for the first of many video sequences. Selecting each of the most photogenic sections of passages and location on our route, we set up lighting panels and took sequences of video. While we videoed, Clive and Steve took still photos. We moved further and further into 1.5 until the Knackeraker pitch was rigged for Keith and Mark to descend. Video was taken in the lower passage and then the struggle back up the pitch was made. At this point Clive and Steve rejoined us, so all moved off to find the Boulder Bridge and rig the pitch down into the passage below. Video and stills were taken in the lower passage and Falcon Chamber, and a little while was taken trying to find a route into the choke in the lower end of the passage. We then headed up the passage to Falcon Chamber where some time was taken over stills and video with time running out we headed up the pitch and back to the squeezes and the other route into OFD 1.5 where we made the decision to return the following day to complete the video and for Brendan to bring in his camera to photograph the chambers and passage below the Boulder Bridge. Some tackle was stashed and we headed out the cave a little lighter than when we came in.

Mel and Rich arrived right on cue on Sunday morning and so we headed into the cave a little earlier than the previous day. The trip was repeated this time picking the locations where we needed more people and light than we had on the previous day. This time we ignored Knackeracker and went direct to the Boulder Bridge and dropped down to the passages below. Some time was spent here again taking video and stills before we returned via the squeezes.

Panda-Moan-ium in OFD Top

On Thursday Andy approached me for a gentle Sunday trip, so as Brendan, Chloe and I were to be in South Wales for the weekend I invited him to join us on the Sunday for a trip in OFD Top Entrance.

As Brendan had a meeting to attend it would just be Chloe, Andy and I on the trip. There were a couple of areas I hadn't visited since getting in to the photographic side to caving and so thought I'd add these to the usual suspects of the more tourist parts.

Our first objective was to do the awkward 25ft climb up to the Mini Columns. I went up first and rigged a hand line. Now both Jess and I have been known to strip off our over suits in the past to facilitate a tight squeeze, but I'd never before heard of anyone shedding their over suit for a climb!
It transpires that although Chloe's new custom made suit is very slimming, it is somewhat restrictive when attempting a climb that requires you to put your foot over your ear. To both my and Andy's amusement not only did Chloe declare she was stripping, but she was following Jess's trend of wearing an Animal theme onesie! Unfortunately I was a little busy assisting otherwise it would have occurred to me to get a picture of a Panda clad Chloe performing the climb!!! Oh well maybe next time : )
Andy was next and managed admirably without needing to use the hand line.
After Chloe put her kit back on we continued on, our route taking in the Mini Columns and then past White Arch and on through to Edwards Short cut. I slid down first showing Andy how to control the decent. Andy then replicated the technique, followed by Chloe who didn't bother with the controlled part…..fortunately Andy and I provided a nice soft landing for her ; )
Everyone had no problem with traverses and we were soon at my next photographic objective; Frozen River. After a few more pictures we reversed our route, taking in  the awkward, occasionally snug, crawls and rift alternative to the slippery climb back up to Gnome passage. At this point we only had a few hours left till our call out so I gave Andy the choice of what he fancied doing. His reply was he fancied doing the same trip as Keith and I had taken the others on the previous week, so at a reasonable pace we replicated the previous weeks route. What I hadn't known was that Andy had only had a few hours sleep the night before, having been in North Wales.
By the time we exited a rather overheated and tired Andy was very glad to get back to the club for a shower and cuppa before the long drive home.

Getting Stuck Into OFD 1.5

This was a trip on the top of our bucket list for some time, but with the exceptionally wet winter the direct route up the streamway had been out of the question for some time, and this weekend was our first opportunity to get into it. A late start due to the A465 being closed and an extreme tea drinking session starting on arrival at SWCC, it was almost noon when we disappeared underground. The water in the streamway was down to near normal levels and we were soon sliding through the boulder choke, the sump making much less noise than the week before. Through the connection we went and then headed up a boulder slope to find a passage that would lead us into OFD 1.5. Soon we had found what was marked on the survey as the tight slot and down we slid, this would be harder on the return. We then dropped down mud cemented boulders into a passage and followed it for quite a distance until it ended in a dig. Consulting the survey we identified the location of the connection with the large passage above and soon Brendan was trying to squeeze through boulders at the top of the mud slope. He had no luck so Mark then took the lead making it through and so the rest followed. We explored the massive passages, and then climbed up a balcony to explore a total maze of passages. At one point Mark located a climb down that will make a much easier route into this series on a future visit. Back in the main passages we followed a large loop through a super loose boulder choke to reach a passage that had been dug through. Passing through the dig we followed a crawl for some distance to reach a beautiful dried crystal pool and a climb down to the top of the Knackeracker pitch. This was just as nice as it sounds and the ladder can only be rigged in the tightest part of the rift so was fun on the way down. At the bottom the passage ends both ways, but is decorated with a fine array of helictites. After a few photos we headed back up the pitch, an altogether more serious undertaking in reverse. After a lot of puffing panting and a little of the heave ho we were all up and then made our way out of the cave.

A 7hr epic round trip to Lowe’s chain?

Saturday morning saw myself, Jess and Brendan sat around as usual in the SWCC hut nursing a full teapot. I had abstained from making any trip decisions and Brendan was looking worse for wear after not a lot of sleep courtesy of a heavy snorer in the bunk below him the night before. After a couple of teapots we finally decided to see what the water levels were like in OFD1 for a possible trip in to OFD1 ½.
Plodding down the hill we were soon at ‘The Step’ checking out the water level. Although high it was probably at a doable level, but as the forecast was more rain we decided to abandon our original trip plans and have a poke around passages that Jess and I hadn’t been to before on the round trip.
En route we diverted to check out The Maypole Traverse before continuing through to explore Slime Street, then in to the Subway to re-emerge in Bridge passage. After getting a little giddy in the roll over crawl we continued on to Starlight Chamber, where Brendan and I went for a play in the tight bedding planes and chokes past Coronation Aven before heading to Lowe’s Climb. The water levels were pretty impressive and we were glad we had decided to do our alternative rather than push on in the stream way. On the way out we checked back at the step and were awed to find that the stream level had risen a good 3 feet from when we had entered!
After the slog back up the hill we were surprised to find we had managed to spend a full 7hrs playing underground and were all glad to see the familiar teapot back at the hut.

A good fun trip visiting some interesting parts of the system normally passed when on the ‘trade routes’
